Microsoft previously faced a setback by writing off $900 million, believing that Nvidia's Arm chip would serve as the foundation for the first flagship Windows device in the Surface lineup. Now, the company has introduced the Surface Laptop Ultra, a new flagship laptop powered by Nvidia's Arm chips.
Currently, not all details about the 15-inch Surface Laptop Ultra are available, including its final specifications and retail price. However, Microsoft has stated that this device is the most powerful in the Surface family. Andrew Hill, head of the Surface division, remarked, "This is the most powerful thing we've ever created."
The laptop is equipped with an Nvidia RTX Spark Arm processor, whose specifications largely align with the chip used in last year's DGX Spark mini-PCs optimized for Windows 11. The flagship version features 20 cores, graphics with 6144 CUDA cores, and supports up to 128 GB of RAM, while the base models will only have 16 GB.
The Surface Laptop Ultra is expected to provide typical "all-day battery life," graphics comparable to a laptop with a GeForce RTX 5070, and up to 1 PFLOPS of AI computing power. It boasts a 15-inch Mini LED display with touch support and a pixel density of 262 PPI, with peak brightness reaching 2000 cd/m². Additionally, it features the largest haptic trackpad ever included in a Surface device.
The new laptop will be available in dark gray and silver colors and is expected to weigh less than 2 kg. It includes USB Type-C, USB Type-A, HDMI ports, a full-size SD card slot, and a headphone jack.
