Liquid Glass.
WhatsApp is enhancing its iPad app with a new interface that includes a Mac-like sidebar, following several months of Liquid Glass beta testing. This update aims to improve the user experience on larger screens.
While the adaptation of its iOS app for the Liquid Glass visual overhaul began last October, the redesigned interface for iPad was only introduced later, with a limited beta test in June. At that time, reports indicated that the redesign featured Liquid Glass-style elements like tabs and buttons, while maintaining the same bottom tab bar as the iPhone.
Now, the new sidebar replaces the bottom tab bar by default, providing quick access to Chats, Updates, Communities, Calls, and other sections of the app. Users can also hide the sidebar to create more space for the chat list and conversation view.
The sidebar occupies part of the screen, which is generally not an issue on the iPad due to its larger display. However, some users may prefer a more spacious conversation interface. When the sidebar is hidden, WhatsApp expands the chat list and conversation view towards the center of the screen, reducing the feeling of compression.
The new feature is available to some beta testers running the latest TestFlight build, and some regular App Store users are also beginning to see it. As is common with WhatsApp rollouts, it may take time for the new interface to reach all users, but it promises to enhance the tablet-friendly layout for iPad users once available.
