Omega has launched a new collection of Speedmasters featuring a compact 38-mm case size. This collection includes seven new color variants that have been modified to enhance the existing 38-mm Speedy lineup. One of the most notable improvements is the replacement of oval subdials with rounded ones, similar to those found on the Moonwatch. Additionally, they have been redesigned in the Moonwatch style and are now thicker, incorporating the essential Dot-Over-Ninety.
The new collection is powered by two self-winding movements. The Caliber 3330 powers six models with date functions, including an $11,700 cappuccino-style version with an ivory main dial, contrasting brown PVD-coated subdials, a stainless steel case, and an 18K Sedna gold bezel.
The standout model is the seventh Black Dial reference without a date, driven by the Caliber 3332. Omega markets this $6,500 watch as being much more closely aligned with the signature look of the Moonwatch, which it certainly is, compared to the existing black 38-mm model that features a date window and a less appealing bezel design.
With its reduced size, clean black matte-finish dial, Moonwatch-style five-link bracelet, and significantly improved black aluminum bezel, the new model evokes memories of the classic Speedmaster Reduced from the late 1980s. A friend of mine owns a Reduced, and I have coveted it for years, as it always appears to be the perfect size on the wrist.
Launched in 1988, the Speedmaster Reduced had an ideal case size of 38.5 mm, compared to the 38 mm of this new model. Other subtle differences include the crown position on the Reduced, which is lower and visibly offset from the pushers, and the bezel does not feature the Dot-Over-Ninety.
The most significant giveaway that this is not a faithful reissue of the Reduced is the different positioning of the subdials. On the Reduced, the layout was running seconds at 3, the 12-hour totalizer at 6, and the 30-minute totalizer at 9. On this 38 mm model, it's reversed, with the 30-minute totalizer at 3 and running seconds at 9, just like on the larger Moonwatch.
Therefore, it might be best to think of this enticingly sized new 38-mm black Speedy as a “mini Moonwatch,” as it shares more design cues with the iconic Speedmaster, despite its smaller dimensions recalling the Reduced models from the '80s. Regardless, the 38-mm price makes it the most affordable black-dial “Moonwatch” Speedmaster currently available, which is a welcome surprise for those with slender wrists.
