Apple is preparing to launch smart glasses aimed at competing with Meta's Ray-Ban and other market players, as reported by Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman in his Sunday newsletter, Bloomberg Power On. The company plans to adopt a strategy similar to that used during the launch of its smartwatches, aiming to dominate the market.
The smart glasses are expected to debut in late 2026 or early 2027, with a target price range of $200 to $500. Apple intends to compete not just with Meta and Samsung, but also with EssilorLuxottica SA, which produces eyewear under brands like Ray-Ban, Oakley, and Persol, as well as with the Safilo Group and other market participants.
To stand out from the competition, Apple is focusing on high-quality design, utilizing acetate for the main body, which is considered more durable and luxurious compared to plastic. Gurman stated that the goal is to create an instantly recognizable design, referred to internally at Apple as an “icon.”
Currently, four design options for the smart glasses are being tested: large rectangular frames reminiscent of Ray-Ban Wayfarers, thinner rectangular frames similar to those worn by Apple CEO Tim Cook, large oval or round frames, and smaller, sleeker oval or round shapes. Potential color options include black, ocean blue, and light brown.
The camera will differ from that of Meta's smart glasses, with Apple planning to use vertically oriented oval lenses surrounded by indicator lights. There will be no built-in display as these are not augmented reality glasses. Instead, Apple is preparing to release glasses equipped with cameras, microphones, and sensors that will facilitate photo and video capture, phone calls, notifications, and hands-free interaction with AI features like enhanced Siri.
Notably, Apple does not plan to target the luxury eyewear market, competing with brands like Cartier and Matsuda. According to Gurman, the company is also working on advanced augmented reality glasses with built-in displays, but those are still several years away from release.
